He has to understand that pure talent does not pick one player over the other. That brings me to my next point. Bleacher Report’s Jason Pettigrove recently wrote a piece addressing why Pogba would not fit into Barcelona’s tactical set up. And in many ways he was correct. While Barcelona have slightly shifted away from the tiki taka style, keyword slightly, it is still engraved in their play. Andres Iniesta is a prime example of a Barcelona midfielder. He’s agile, technically gifted, and plays short quick one twos before bursting into space. While Pogba is strong skill-wise, his skillset is not similar to the Barca mould of a midfielder. Pettigrove excellently described Pogba as an “aggressive, rampaging midfielder” who has a “lolloping style”. Now, some may say that every team needs a foil player, or one that has different strengths but compliments the other players well. Well, unfortunately for Paul Pogba, Barcelona have already signed that player, Ivan Rakitic. Pogba might well grow as a player to surpass Rakitic in his role at the Spanish club, but that will not happen overnight. Rakitic, while more similar to Pogba than any of Barca’s other midfielders, still has a different style than Pogba. Additionally, Barcelona already have both Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets. Both play key roles in their side and sacrificing either one of them would be detrimental to the team. Pogba would need to adapt his playing style to meet Barcelona’s demands. The France international would need take over a role in Barcelona’s midfield and that would require a change in style.
It is particularly odd that Barcelona would spend upwards of 80 million euros on a player who, currently does not fit into the team. Unless Barcelona are willing drop one of their excellent midfield trio that won the Champions League, it is hard see Pogba getting a real shot at the Catalan club. That compounded with Pogba’s restlessness when not playing week in, week out as well as his differing playing style to what Barcelona need, makes it even harder to see how Pogba will find a place. In truth, Barcelona will not change to account for Pogba’s needs like Juve. Juve’s entire setup is based around the French stallion as they try to get the best out of him. It is instead Pogba that will have to change himself in more ways than one.
